The Most Noble Order of the Desert Flame is a chivalric order of men and women, established and constituted by the Sovereign of the Order, with the purpose of encouraging and promoting useful and charitable works and dedicated service both civilian and military within the realm.

The officers of the Order maintain the Order internally and manage the external business. The Officers meet throughout the year with the Australian Privy Council to discuss perspective members for the Order.

The members both civilian and military are appointed by invitation, for recognition of their service and dedication to useful and charitable works with foundations of God and faith, distinguished leadership in districts or towns within the realm, for acts of self-sacrifice, bravery, courage and for sustained meritorious military service or for acts of conspicuous courage or bravery in face of the enemy.

The various awards, honours and decorations reflect the level of their service to the Order or to the Sovereign and realm and form an Order of rank within the Order, in both civilian and military divisions.
